make it your own

Here are some hand built vases just out of the kiln.  I will be taking these to Flights of Fancy - Garden Party XXXIII tomorrow, Sat., Oct. 17 from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm along with some other items.
 My favorite.

A little Michael Kline inspired vine pattern.  I have to say, seeing these out of the kiln, what really interests me is the little line etchings left by my metal rib.  I want to do more with that casual texture. Sometimes I try to emulate an aspect of another potter's work because I learn from doing. Chances are, the results are far from the original.  Chances are, somewhere in the process I end up taking the shape or decoration in a different direction from the original.  Always, I learn from the experience. In this case making the overall vine design didn't feel natural to me, but an accident of the process is something I want to pursue.  So, when someone wants to try something I do, but expresses reluctance to copy, I tell him/her to go ahead, give it a try -here's how I do it, then make it your own.
